In summer 2025, Sophia Otálora González presented her research on classifying Parkinson’s disease medication states through gait analysis at two international conferences within the same fortnight: the ISPGR World Congress in Maastricht and the IEEE International Conference on Digital Health (ICDH) in Helsinki.

ISPGR World Congress 2025 – Maastricht, Netherlands

Sophia presented a poster, “Classification of Medication States in Parkinson’s Disease Patients Through Gait Analysis,” at the 2025 International Society of Posture & Gait Research (ISPGR) World Congress, held in Maastricht from 29 June to 3 July 2025.

Using wearable sensor data and machine learning, the work classified medication “ON” and “OFF” states with 80-85% accuracy, with frequency-related gait features proving the most useful for distinguishing between states.

IEEE ICDH 2025 – Helsinki, Finland

Sophia also gave a talk on this work at the IEEE International Conference on Digital Health (ICDH) 2025, held in Helsinki from 7–12 July, alongside the IEEE World Congress on SERVICES. The full paper is available via IEEE Xplore.

About the Conferences

The ISPGR World Congress brings together clinicians and basic scientists to discuss the latest advancements in clinical practice, technology, and fundamental science related to gait and posture.

ICDH is a major annual event bringing together researchers, healthcare professionals, and industry leaders to discuss innovations in digital healthcare, AI in medicine, and health data transformation.
